The Rainforest Cafe at Menlo Park Mall, a beloved jungle-themed dining spot, officially shut its doors on Wednesday, February 19, after 26 years of operation.

The closure, attributed to an unrenewed lease within the mall, marks the end of an era for the Edison location, leaving just one Rainforest Cafe in the state.

The restaurant, known for its animatronic animals, tropical ambiance, and family-friendly dining experience, had been a fixture at the Menlo Park Mall since 1999.

Its closure was confirmed by Rainforest Cafe Chief Operating Officer Terry Turney in a statement shared with News 12.

“We are grateful for the years of support from our loyal guests and dedicated team members,” Turney said. He also hinted at future plans, noting that the company is actively seeking a new location to continue serving its New Jersey fanbase.

The decision not to renew the lease comes as shopping malls nationwide adapt to changing retail and dining trends, with some chains reevaluating their physical footprints. For many local patrons, the closure is a bittersweet moment. “It was a fun place to take the kids,” said Edison resident Sarah Michaels, who visited the restaurant with her family last month. “The animals, the thunderstorms—it was an experience you couldn’t find anywhere else.”

With the Menlo Park location gone, New Jersey’s sole remaining Rainforest Cafe stands along the Atlantic City boardwalk, a popular tourist destination. The chain, once a staple of 1990s mall culture, has seen its presence shrink over the years, with fewer than 20 locations still operating across the United States.

While no specific timeline was provided for a potential new site, Turney’s statement offers hope to fans that the Rainforest Cafe could return to central New Jersey. Until then, the Atlantic City location remains the last outpost for state residents craving a meal amid the sights and sounds of a simulated jungle.

The closure adds to a week of notable headlines in New Jersey, from NJ Transit leaders addressing commuter complaints to a Jersey City water main break prompting boil water advisories in Hoboken. For now, the quieting of the Menlo Park Mall’s rainforest leaves behind memories of roaring gorillas and cascading waterfalls—and a question mark about where the chain might resurface next.
