EVESHAM, N.J. — A Cherry Hill man was arrested after allegedly attempting to defraud a resident out of $40,000 by posing as an FBI agent, Evesham police said.
Detectives began investigating the case on February 13 after the victim reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be with the FBI. The caller allegedly told the victim they owed the government $40,000 and instructed them to withdraw the money, stating that a “courier” would arrive to collect the cash.
Detectives intercepted the courier before he reached the victim’s residence. He was identified as Brij Shukla, 28, of Cherry Hill, and was arrested without incident.
Shukla was charged with third-degree criminal attempt (theft by deception) and was released on a summons under New Jersey’s bail reform laws, pending his first court appearance in Burlington County Superior Court.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Evesham Police Department at 856-983-1116 or submit anonymous tips by texting ETPDTIP to 847411.
