Fierce storms knock out power for 50,000 in New Jersey as crews battle high winds
TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Tens of thousands of residents across New Jersey remain without power after powerful storms and high winds swept through the state, utility provider Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) said.
Crews are working in hazardous conditions to restore service to approximately 50,000 customers still in the dark. More than 60,000 customers have already had their electricity restored, according to the company.
Restoration efforts are expected to continue overnight and into the following day. However, dangerous winds forecasted to persist for another 24 hours may delay some repairs.
JCP&L warned that strong winds could prevent crews from using bucket trucks until conditions improve, though ground crews will continue working where possible. “The safety of our crews and our customers is our top priority,” the company stated.
Officials urged residents to stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines and report hazards to emergency services. They also advised customers to use generators outdoors, avoid using ovens as heat sources, and exercise caution with open flames.
The utility company said it would provide ongoing updates as work progresses.
