WASHINGTON, D.C. — The number of migrant encounters at the U.S. southwest border fell to 229 in the past 24 hours, a dramatic decrease from the peak of over 11,000 daily crossings under President Joe Biden, according to U.S. Border Czar Thomas Homan.
Homan, a longtime immigration enforcement official, credited President Donald Trump’s policies for the sharp decline. “President Trump promised a secure border and he is delivering,” Homan wrote Monday on social media.
Homan, who began his career as a Border Patrol agent in 1984, said he could not recall numbers ever being this low. The drop follows Trump’s recent executive actions tightening border security, including expanded deportation operations and restrictions on asylum claims.
The Biden administration had faced record-breaking border crossings, fueling a political battle over immigration policy. Trump has vowed further enforcement measures, including mass deportations and reinstating strict border controls.
The significant reduction in encounters marks a sharp shift in immigration enforcement under Trump’s leadership.
