Couple charged with abandoning elderly woman in basement while on vacation she paid for

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A York County couple has been charged with abandoning a care-dependent woman in a basement while they went on vacation, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced.

Ashlee Brady and Brian Brady, both 32, of Hanover, are accused of leaving Ashlee’s mother locked behind a dog gate in the basement of their home. The woman was found soiled, alone, and with only hot dogs and two cups of water. Emergency responders discovered her in February after a relative called for assistance.

Both defendants are also charged with financial exploitation. Prosecutors say they used more than $10,000 of the victim’s money for vacations, alcohol, and personal expenses. Brian Brady, who was paid through Medicaid to care for the victim, allegedly submitted fraudulent claims for services he did not provide.

“These alleged acts are truly disturbing on many levels — as these defendants were not only family, her own daughter and son-in-law, they were paid to look out for this victim’s best interests,” Attorney General Sunday said.

Ashlee Brady faces additional charges of perjury and witness intimidation for allegedly lying under oath about the incident. Brian Brady has been charged with four counts of Medicaid fraud. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 27.
