NYC man charged with murder after human remains found stuffed in suitcase, floating in the East River

NEW YORK A 23-year-old Manhattan man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after police recovered human remains from a suitcase in the East River last week, authorities said.

On Wednesday, February 5, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the NYPD Harbor Unit retrieved a suitcase containing human remains near Governors Island. The remains were transported to Pier 16, where EMS pronounced the individual deceased. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The victim has been identified as Edwin Echevarria, 65, of Manhattan.

Police arrested Christian Millet, 23, of Manhattan, in connection with the killing. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body.
