WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was shot and killed Monday evening in the parking garage of Union Station, causing panic among commuters on the first day thousands of federal workers returned to in-office work, according to D.C. Police Chief.
Authorities said the victim was shot inside the parking structure but managed to run toward the escalators inside the station before collapsing. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead near the waiting area.
The shooting occurred during the busy rush hour commute, sending police running through the station as bystanders looked on. Witnesses described seeing officers quickly responding to the scene.
Union Station, one of the busiest transit hubs in the nation, was filled with travelers, federal employees, and commuters at the time of the shooting. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or any information on a possible suspect.
D.C. Police continue to investigate the shooting as they review surveillance footage and gather witness statements.
It is now rumored that the Trump administration will try to end the district’s home-rule policy and take control of the capitol to reign in rampant crime and political corruption.
