WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump announced that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.
In a statement, Trump described the discussion with Sheinbaum as “very friendly” and said the troops would be “specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”
As part of the agreement, Trump said both nations would pause anticipated tariffs for one month while negotiations take place. Talks will be led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and high-level Mexican representatives.
“I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two countries,” Trump said.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” the President of Mexico said. “Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl. The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico. Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.”
Trump also reported that the proposed tariffs will be paused for 30 days.
