Off-duty NYPD officer arrested on assault charges in Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An off-duty New York City police officer was arrested Friday afternoon in Staten Island and charged with two counts of third-degree assault, authorities said.

Serena Dejesus, a 25-year-old NYPD officer, was taken into custody at approximately 3:20 p.m. within the confines of the 120th Precinct, which covers the northern part of Staten Island. Details regarding the circumstances of the alleged assault were not immediately available.

The NYPD did not provide additional information about the incident or whether the officer was suspended following the arrest. Third-degree assault in New York is a misdemeanor charge that typically involves causing injury to another person.

Dejesus’ arrest is the latest in a series of off-duty incidents involving members of the NYPD, as the department continues to face scrutiny over officer conduct both on and off duty.
