MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. — A fire at Calloway Family Farm destroyed two large buildings, farm equipment, and vehicles Tuesday, causing an estimated $2 million in damages.
Firefighters from Mardela Springs and surrounding departments responded to the blaze at 8341 Athol Road. The fire, which broke out shortly after noon, took more than two hours to control. Fifty firefighters battled the flames as strong winds helped spread the fire.
Investigators determined the fire likely originated from a nearby burn pile that had been legally set the day before. Employees at the farm noticed the fire had reignited, and shifting winds pushed the flames toward dry brush, eventually reaching the buildings.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made. The farm had no smoke alarms, fire alarms, or sprinkler systems in place at the affected structures.
State fire marshals continue to investigate, but preliminary findings suggest the fire was accidental.
