Coast Guard issues warning order for return to in-person work following presidential directive

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Coast Guard has issued a warning order directing all personnel to prepare for a return to full-time, in-person work, effective no later than February 12, 2025, in alignment with a Presidential Memorandum signed by President Trump on January 20, 2025.

The memorandum mandates the termination of remote work and telework arrangements across all federal departments and agencies, as outlined in subsequent guidance from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The Coast Guard is now implementing the directive, with an emphasis on achieving 100% in-person attendance at assigned duty stations to fulfill its critical mission.

Personnel currently working remotely or teleworking will need to make necessary arrangements, including childcare, transit, and parking, to comply with the new requirements. Exceptions for civilian employees may be considered on a case-by-case basis for those with disabilities or qualifying medical conditions, pending further DHS guidance.

Remote workers whose location is outside their local commuting area are advised to consult with their supervisors to coordinate reporting to the nearest Coast Guard unit.

A Presidential Directive Implementation Team for Personnel (PDIT-P), led by RADM Mike Day, has been established to address logistical and policy challenges such as office space, parking, and IT needs. The Coast Guard will provide additional guidance for specific circumstances, including bargaining unit employees and Reserve members, in future communications.
