ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — A 39-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting the mother of his child early Tuesday morning, the Atlantic City Police Department reported.
Officers responded to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center at approximately 2:48 a.m. after a 32-year-old woman was dropped off at the emergency department with a gunshot wound. The individual who brought her to the hospital fled immediately, police said. The victim, an Atlantic City resident, was treated for serious injuries.
Using surveillance footage, officers located the suspect’s vehicle, which had blood on it, near the first block of South Iowa Avenue. Investigators followed the trail to a nearby apartment where they found Edwin Jones, along with three women, two toddlers, and an infant. Evidence of a crime scene was present in the apartment.
Detectives obtained search warrants for the vehicle and apartment, recovering a handgun and additional evidence outside the building. Investigators determined that Jones had shot the victim and directed a woman, identified as 29-year-old Katie Harpel of Somers Point, to transport her to the hospital. Harpel is accused of attempting to clean the apartment with cleaning supplies to destroy evidence.
Jones faces charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with evidence, and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person. Harpel has been charged with tampering with evidence and hindering apprehension.
The Division of Child Protection & Permanency was contacted to assist with the placement of the three children found in the residence. The investigation remains ongoing.
