STERLING, VA — A simple trip to Wegmans turned life-changing for Thanaphorn Waltrip, who scratched off a $1 million top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s 20X the Money game.
Waltrip purchased her lucky ticket at Wegmans, located at 45131 Columbia Place in Sterling. She opted for the one-time cash option of $625,000 before taxes instead of receiving the full prize over 30 years. Wegmans will also receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Waltrip plans to use her winnings to pay bills and support her family. Her big win marks the fifth top prize claimed in the game, leaving one $1 million prize still up for grabs.
The 20X the Money game features prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,958,400, with overall odds of winning any prize set at 1 in 3.65.
Proceeds from Virginia Lottery ticket sales support K-12 education across the state. Waltrip’s home county, Loudoun, received over $23.6 million in Lottery funding last year. In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery contributed $934 million to public schools, accounting for 10 percent of the state’s K-12 education budget.
