Fire in DC apartment claims woman’s life

WASHINGTON, DC – A tragic apartment fire in Northwest D.C. early Saturday morning has left one woman dead and five residents displaced, according to DC Fire and EMS.

Fire crews responded to the 1800 block of Newton Street for reports of a fire on the first floor of a three-story apartment building. Firefighters rescued a woman with critical, life-threatening injuries from the apartment where the fire originated, as well as another person from the second floor. The injured woman later died as a result of her injuries, officials said.

The D.C. Department of Buildings declared the structure uninhabitable. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the incident.
