CLIFTON, N.J. — A high-stakes chase through alleys and over fences ended with the arrest of a known shoplifting suspect but left a Clifton police sergeant injured in the process.
The incident began when Daniel Bataille, 25, fled Kohl’s on Main Avenue with $1,500 worth of stolen clothing as officers responded to the area, according to Lt. Robert Anderson. Bataille, already linked to a string of thefts in Clifton and nearby towns, was spotted on Franklin Avenue in Nutley by Sgt. Andrew Mulick.
When Mulick approached, Bataille bolted, leading the officer on a multi-block foot pursuit through alleyways and over fences. The chase ended near Tangora Field, where Mulick apprehended the suspect despite injuring his hand during the pursuit.
Bataille was charged with shoplifting and remains in Bergen County Jail awaiting court proceedings. Sgt. Mulick was treated for his injury at a local hospital.
