JACUMBA, Calif. – A hiker in Jacumba, California, was shot twice and strafed with gunfire on Thursday in what officials believe was an attack by cartel operatives, according to U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory K. Bovino.
The incident occurred near the small desert community along the U.S.-Mexico border, an area that has seen cartel activity in recent years. Bovino condemned the attack, stating, “Cartels think they can bring their war here. Think again! Americans won’t be intimidated. Our agents and BORTAC will confront these threats head-on!”
Details about the hiker’s condition or identity were not immediately released. U.S. Border Patrol agents and BORTAC, the agency’s specialized tactical unit, are leading the response and investigation.
Jacumba has long been a crossing point for illegal activity due to its proximity to the border, though violent attacks against civilians in the area are rare. Authorities are working to determine whether the assailants crossed the border or operated from within U.S. territory.
