PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner issued a statement Wednesday criticizing immigration-related threats by the Trump Justice Department, calling for a commitment to constitutional principles and condemning what he described as politically motivated actions.
“Arrests and prosecutions are based on probable cause, not on whether you agree or disagree with a political position,” Krasner stated. His remarks also referenced recent pardons and commutations by the president for over one thousand individuals convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, contrasting that with his own office’s adherence to the rule of law.
Krasner’s statement comes amid ongoing debates over federal immigration policies and the treatment of local officials in sanctuary cities, such as Philadelphia. The Justice Department has previously clashed with cities that decline to assist federal authorities in immigration enforcement efforts.
Krasner emphasized his office’s dedication to constitutional governance, stating, “my office and others will continue to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law.”
