NEW YORK, NY — A 57-year-old woman from Valley Stream, New York, has been charged following a fatal motor vehicle collision that claimed the life of a 76-year-old pedestrian in Manhattan’s West Village last October, according to authorities.

Ana Melendres, of 145 East Hawthorne Avenue, was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care in connection with the incident.

The collision occurred on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at approximately 6:47 p.m., at the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and West 10th Street. Police reported that Melendres, driving a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban, was attempting a left turn from eastbound 10th Street onto northbound Greenwich Avenue when the pedestrian was struck while crossing the street near the north crosswalk.

Responding officers found the victim lying on the roadway with head trauma. Emergency medical services transported her to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day. Melendres remained at the scene and was not injured, police said.

The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the circumstances of the crash, leading to the charges against Melendres.
