UTICA, N.Y. — A 12-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree robbery after allegedly assaulting and threatening another juvenile with a knife during a botched shoe sale in Utica, police announced.
The incident occurred on December 26, 2024, when the victim arranged to meet the suspect—known only by a nickname—to purchase a pair of shoes. According to police, the suspect pushed the victim to the ground and stole a bag containing cash before attempting to flee.
The victim chased the suspect, but when he caught up, the suspect allegedly brandished a large knife and threatened him before fleeing again.
The case was assigned to the Utica Police Department’s Juvenile Aid Unit. Investigators reviewed the suspect’s social media profiles and discovered a photo of him holding the stolen money, which helped police confirm his identity.
Attempts were made for the suspect to voluntarily turn himself in, but he and his guardian failed to appear. By early January, authorities learned the suspect had fled his residence, prompting a missing person investigation.
On January 16, 2025, the suspect was located and taken into custody. Due to his age, he was released to a family member with an appearance ticket after being charged with first-degree robbery.
