QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY, Md. — A mother and son died Wednesday in a fire that consumed their mobile home in Queen Anne’s County, prompting officials to emphasize fire safety during the winter months.
The blaze broke out at a double-wide manufactured home in the 500 block of Fox Meadow Road around 2 p.m., according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. A school bus driver reported the fire after noticing the home engulfed in flames. Fire crews responded to the scene, but after extinguishing the blaze, they found two people deceased inside.
Officials identified the victims as 83-year-old Margarete Brown and her 63-year-old son, Larry Brown. Investigators learned that the family had recently purchased a kerosene heater to replace an older unit, and seven heaters were discovered in the debris. It remains unclear how many of the heaters were in use when the fire started.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. As winter weather continues, officials are calling for vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
