OMAHA, NE — Jack Hoffman, the Nebraska football fan whose unforgettable 69-yard touchdown run in 2013 captured hearts nationwide, has died at the age of 19 after a long battle with brain cancer.
Hoffman was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011 and began chemotherapy in 2012. His inspiring journey gained national attention when he took the field during the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ 2013 spring game, scoring a symbolic touchdown that earned widespread praise and was later honored with the “Best Moment” award at the 2013 ESPYs.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Jack Hoffman. Jack passed away after a long battle with brain cancer, a journey that inspired countless lives and left a legacy of hope, strength, and resilience. Jack Hoffman, you will always be our hero,” the Team Jack Foundation said in a statement.
Hoffman’s story extended beyond the football field. His run helped spark a national conversation about pediatric brain cancer, leading to increased fundraising and awareness efforts. He also met with President Barack Obama at the White House, further highlighting his impact.
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen reflected on Hoffman’s legacy, stating, “Jack inspired millions and won the hearts of people around the world. The touchdown run in Memorial Stadium is one of the best moments in all of Husker football history and it helped launch an important mission to raise funds and find a cure for pediatric brain cancer. Suzanne and I mourn with the Hoffmans, and we join Nebraskans in sending prayers to their family.”
