Crashes and Delays Snarl New Jersey Morning Commute

NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey commuters faced significant delays Wednesday morning due to multiple crashes, disabled vehicles, and ongoing road hazards across major highways and bridges.

In Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, a crash with injuries on I-280 westbound near I-80 forced the closure of the left lane. Emergency crews responded to the scene, causing backups for westbound drivers during the busy morning rush.

Further south, a disabled tractor-trailer on US 1&9 southbound near Wood Avenue in Linden led to the closure of the right lane, slowing traffic in the area. On the Atlantic City Expressway, a crash with injuries near Exit 17 (NJ 50) in Hamilton Township shut down the center toll lane. Authorities urged drivers to move over for emergency workers as crews responded to the scene.

In Cherry Hill Township, a water main break on NJ 38 eastbound near the Cherry Hill Mall closed the right lane. Officials warned drivers to proceed with caution due to hazardous road conditions.

Major bridge crossings also experienced heavy delays. Eastbound drivers on the George Washington Bridge’s upper level faced 40-minute delays from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, while the lower level saw 30-minute delays.

Congestion was widespread across several major highways. Traffic slowed on NJ 29 northbound from I-295 in Hamilton Township to South Warren Street in Trenton due to heavy volume. Similar delays were reported on I-295 northbound through Bellmawr, with slowdowns stretching from Exit 25 (NJ 47/Delsea Drive) to Exit 26S (NJ 42/I-76/I-676).

Drivers on NJ 55 northbound approaching NJ 42 in Deptford Township and on NJ 42 northbound from Gloucester Township to I-295 in Bellmawr also faced heavy traffic. In Union and Springfield townships, westbound I-78 traffic was delayed between Exit 50 (CR 630/Vaux Hall Road) and Exit 48 (NJ 24 West), with travel times increasing by up to 10 minutes.

Further delays were reported on NJ 24 in both directions. Westbound traffic was slow from Millburn Township to Chatham, while eastbound drivers experienced congestion from I-287 to Exit 2 (Columbia Turnpike) in Hanover Township.

Morning commuters were urged to use caution and consider alternate routes as crews continued responding to incidents and clearing roadways.
