FAIR LAWN, NJ — The Fair Lawn Police Department is mourning the loss of Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 3 Jose Valentin, a dedicated public servant remembered for his decades-long commitment to law enforcement and his impact on the local school community.
Officer Valentin, originally from Puerto Rico, moved to Paterson, New Jersey, at the age of 8 and began his law enforcement career in 1986 as an Auxiliary Officer with the Paterson Police Department. Over the years, he served in numerous roles, including Police Dispatcher, Patrol Officer, Traffic Division Officer, DWI Liaison, and Fatal Accident Investigator.
After retiring in April 2016, Valentin continued his service as a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 3 (SLEO3) at Thomas Edison School, where he was known for building meaningful relationships with students and serving as a mentor and role model.

“Officer Valentin’s compassion could not be put into words,” the department shared, highlighting how he helped students feel safe and welcomed, from easing their fears about police sirens to personally escorting new students to class.
A memorial service for Officer Valentin will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Martinez Memorial, 747 Market Street, Paterson, NJ.
Officer Valentin’s legacy of service, kindness, and integrity will be remembered by all who knew him.
