PHILADELPHIA, PA — Police are searching for a suspect involved in a burglary at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Center City, where a valuable religious artifact was stolen over the weekend.
According to the Central Detective Division, the break-in occurred on January 11 at approximately 1:04 a.m. when the suspect forced entry into the church at 21 S. 13th St. by smashing a stained-glass window. Once inside, the individual stole a gold crown adorned with gems from a statue of the Virgin Mary.
Authorities released surveillance footage showing the suspect, described as a male wearing a facemask, a black jacket, grey pants, and red or pink sneakers.
No injuries were reported, but the theft of the crown has left parishioners and church officials shaken.
Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect to come forward as the investigation continues.
