GOSHEN, NY — A Newburgh man has been sentenced to five years in state prison for attempting to possess a loaded firearm, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced Thursday.

Romaine Calhoun, 21, received the sentence on Monday before Judge Craig Stephen Brown in Orange County Court, along with three years of post-release supervision.

Calhoun had previously pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree after authorities discovered a loaded .38 caliber revolver beneath his seat during a traffic stop.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2024, when New York State Police pulled over a vehicle on South William Street in Newburgh for traffic violations and impounded the car after determining neither occupant had a valid driver’s license.

District Attorney Hoovler praised state police for their role in the arrest, stating, “The illegal possession of firearms goes hand-in-hand with other violent crimes perpetrated in Orange County.”
