CLEVELAND, OH — Mackenzie Shirilla, 20, has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years for the intentional car crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend, Davion Flanagan, 19.
In August 2023, Shirilla was convicted in a bench trial of multiple charges, including murder, after surveillance footage revealed she deliberately drove into a brick wall at high speed. The crash occurred after Shirilla slowly turned from Pearl Road onto Alameda Drive before accelerating down the street and crashing, killing both passengers.
“The video clearly shows the purpose and intent of the defendant,” Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said during sentencing. “She chose a course of death and destruction that day.”
Judge Russo described Shirilla’s actions as “controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful,” emphasizing that whether Shirilla intended to harm herself was irrelevant to the case.
Prosecutors argued Shirilla showed a “shocking lack of remorse,” citing her attendance at a concert in a wheelchair while recovering from the crash. During victim impact statements, Shirilla shook her head as Dominic Russo’s mother, Christine Russo, condemned her actions.
“No one wanted this to be a murder, or to punish Mackenzie Shirilla for this accident, but this was not a car accident,” Christine Russo said in court. “The evidence and science proved that Mackenzie Shirilla murdered my son Dominic as well as Davion.”
