TRENTON, NJ – When it comes to vanity license plates in New Jersey, you can get a personalized message on your car, but you have to play by the rules. Sometimes, people try to push the limits, but New Jersey has a strict vetting process when it comes to these unique plates.
According to the Motor Vehicle Commission, personalized license plates are available for vehicle owners interested in customizing their vehicle’s identification. These plates can be obtained for a one-time fee of $50, in addition to the standard vehicle registration fees. It’s important for owners to maintain current registration as allowing it to lapse for more than two years incurs an additional $50 fee to reactivate the personalized plates.
The license plates will be issued in the name of the registered owner as specified in the application. If there is a need to reissue the plates under a different name, an additional $50 fee is charged. All requests for personalized plates are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and a reservation is only confirmed upon completion of the application and receipt of the necessary fee.
Application forms for personalized plates are accessible at all Motor Vehicle Agencies. It should be noted that certain combinations of characters that are deemed offensive will not be approved, and some combinations are already reserved for specific groups such as governmental agencies, automobile dealers, doctors, and automobile collectors, thus are not available for personalization.
Several years ago, there was an OPRA request to find out which plates were banned by New Jersey and the list was huge. These are plates people actually applied for and were rejected.
