TRENTON, N.J. — A man carrying two rifles and three handguns was arrested Friday afternoon after boarding an Amtrak train headed for Virginia, New Jersey Transit officials said.

The incident began around 3 p.m. at Newark Penn Station, where New Jersey Transit Police were alerted to an unattended bag. Upon inspection, officers discovered a handgun and a loaded rifle inside, according to a New Jersey Transit spokesperson.

Investigators quickly determined that the person believed to have left the bag had purchased an Amtrak ticket and boarded a train bound for Virginia.

The train was intercepted in Trenton, where authorities arrested the suspect. Additional weapons, including another rifle and two more handguns, were found in the suspect’s possession.

The man’s identity and the purpose of his travel with the firearms were not immediately disclosed. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the weapons and the suspect’s intentions.
