CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — An inmate at Ross Correctional Institution fatally attacked a prison guard on Christmas morning, leaving staff and family mourning the loss of a respected officer who was working overtime to allow others to spend the holiday at home.
The victim, 55-year-old Andrew Lansing, was reportedly ambushed by inmate Rashawn Cannon, 27, in the prison yard. Cannon, who was serving a sentence for a violent assault in 2023, veered away from the dining hall and attacked Lansing without warning, according to Annette Chambers-Smith, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
“Andy Lansing elected to work voluntary overtime so that other people didn’t have to and could have Christmas off,” Chambers-Smith said in a statement, adding that Lansing had been a “friendly, outgoing officer” respected by colleagues.
Officials said Lansing had previously filed a conduct report against Cannon in April for disrespect, threats, and disobedience, with Cannon found guilty of two of the three charges. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the Christmas Day attack.
Cannon’s criminal record spans over a decade, including a conviction for pistol-whipping a woman in 2023, breaking her nose and loosening her teeth. He had been set for release in 2030, but now faces additional charges in connection with Lansing’s death.
Lansing’s death has left a profound impact on the Ross Correctional Institution staff and community, with officials calling it a “tragedy beyond comprehension.”
