SALEM, N.J. — A drone was reportedly spotted flying near the PSE&G nuclear power plants in Salem County on Saturday night, prompting a response from the company and an investigation by authorities.
The sighting occurred near the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations, which are located along the Delaware River. In a statement, a PSE&G spokesperson confirmed the incident and said, “PSE&G is aware of reports of drones flying over the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. We have contacted the appropriate authorities.”
The company assured the public that security remains a top priority. “The safety and security of our employees, customers, and communities are our top priority, and we will continue to work with authorities,” the spokesperson added.
The details of the drone’s flight path or operator have not been disclosed, and no disruptions to operations at the power plants were reported. The Federal Aviation Administration prohibits drones from flying near critical infrastructure, including nuclear power facilities.
According to Congressman Jeff Van Drew, recent reports from officials indicate that the drones have been hovering near critical infrastructure, including the PSEG Nuclear Power Plant in Salem County, where two drones—approximately the size of small SUVs—were observed flying in close proximity. In response to this potential threat, PSEG has requested airspace restrictions.
“We are not stopping until we get to the bottom of this,” said Congressman Van Drew. “We are currently working with the FBI to gather more information, and we have requested a classified briefing to ensure that we get the answers the people deserve. I will continue to keep the public informed and provide updates as we receive new information. The safety of our communities and infrastructure is non-negotiable, and we will act decisively to protect both.”
Van Drew was the congressman who alleged that the drones are coming from an offshore Iranian mothership. The Department of Defense has since denied his allegation.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential security risks posed by unauthorized drone activity near sensitive sites.
