BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for a 2021 machete attack that killed his grandfather and wounded two other family members, including a 4-year-old girl, during a violent rampage in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Dayquan Dubose, 26, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his 79-year-old grandfather, James Dubose Sr. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Kitsis handed down the sentence on Friday, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
“This sentence holds the defendant accountable for a tragic, senseless, and truly horrific act of violence perpetrated against members of his own family,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “My condolences go out to the family of James Dubose Sr. for their tremendous loss.”
The attack occurred on January 3, 2021, inside a home on Putnam Avenue. Prosecutors said Dubose attacked his 4-year-old niece with an 18-inch machete, cutting her on the hip, before moving upstairs and fatally stabbing his grandfather in the abdomen. When a 49-year-old brother-in-law attempted to intervene, he was slashed on the hand. Two family members restrained Dubose until police arrived and arrested him.
James Dubose Sr. died at Interfaith Medical Center. The two surviving victims were treated at local hospitals and have since recovered from their injuries.
