The bill, A928, sponsored by Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson and Assemblyman Anthony S. Verrelli, both representing District 15, outlines specific maintenance responsibilities for sections of West State Street, West Lafayette Street, Barrack Street, and Memorial Drive. The proposed law would require the DOT to handle tasks such as road paving and snow plowing in these areas.
Under the measure, the DOT could consult or contract with state agencies, counties, or municipalities already responsible for adjacent roadways to fulfill these obligations. The bill aims to ensure that critical infrastructure around the capitol is properly maintained, though it does not specify additional funding allocations or cost estimates for the work.
“This legislation is a step toward ensuring the roads around our state government’s center are safe and accessible,” reads the accompanying statement. Maintenance of the roadways is seen as essential to supporting the daily operations of the Capitol Complex and surrounding areas.
