HACKENSACK, N.J. — The Hackensack Police Department has issued an advisory to residents following an uptick in drone sightings across the state, urging the public to remain watchful and report any suspicious activity involving unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
In a statement released Friday, police noted that while drones are widely used for legitimate purposes such as search and rescue, delivery services, and security operations, they can also be exploited for illegal or malicious activities, including potential acts of terrorism.
“While there is currently no known threat to public safety, the FBI, New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness are asking residents to stay vigilant,” the advisory said.
Hackensack authorities emphasized that drones are also employed by local law enforcement to support public safety operations, such as search and rescue efforts and incident response. Residents were reminded to distinguish between official police drones and other UAS when reporting suspicious activity.
Suspicious drone activity can be reported to the FBI at 1-800-225-5324 or the Hackensack Police Department at (201) 646-7777. Tips and video evidence may also be submitted online through the FBI’s reporting platform.
