TOMS RIVER, N.J. — As holiday decorating begins across the region, the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention is reminding residents to prioritize safety with tips to prevent fires and hazards this season.
Officials encourage careful inspection of holiday lights before use, urging homeowners to check for frayed wires or broken sockets, which could pose fire risks. Damaged strands should be replaced immediately, the bureau advised in its Friday safety announcement.
Residents are also warned against overloading electrical outlets, which can lead to overheating. Using multiple outlets and adhering to manufacturers’ wattage guidelines can reduce the risk of electrical fires.
The bureau recommends turning off all holiday lights, candles, and decorations when leaving home or going to bed, a simple habit that reduces fire risk and conserves energy. Additionally, flammable decorations should be kept away from heat sources such as candles, fireplaces, and heaters.
Choosing flame-resistant or flame-retardant materials for trees, garlands, and ornaments can further enhance safety. “This small decision can make a big difference in fire safety,” the bureau emphasized.
Fire officials remind Toms River residents that safe decorating practices are key to ensuring a hazard-free holiday season.
