Marine Corps veteran honored for heroism in foiling attempted robbery

DOVER, Del. — The Dover Police Department presented Jermaine Milam, a USMC Marine Corps veteran with the Distinguished Citizen Award on Tuesday, recognizing his swift actions in stopping an attempted robbery outside a local Staples store in September.

Milam, who was leaving the store on September 27, responded to a woman’s screams and discovered that she was being targeted by a would-be robber. Without hesitation, Milam subdued the suspect and restrained him until officers arrived at the scene, enabling a successful arrest, police said.

The department commended Milam’s bravery during the award presentation but emphasized that such actions, while heroic, are not encouraged for personal safety reasons.

“While we do not encourage these types of actions for your own safety, we thank and applaud Mr. Milam for his selfless actions,” the department stated in a social media post.

The suspect’s identity and charges have not been disclosed, but police officials said Milam’s intervention was instrumental in resolving the incident without further harm.

Jermaine Milam’s decisive action has been hailed as a shining example of courage and community spirit.
