STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An off-duty New York City Police Department detective was arrested Tuesday evening in Staten Island and charged with a range of offenses, including firearm manufacturing and tampering with public records, authorities confirmed.
Anthony Sciortino, 35, was taken into custody at 8:01 p.m. within the confines of the 123rd Precinct. The detective now faces a litany of charges, including one count of tampering with public records in the first degree, two counts of manufacturing a machine gun, and two counts of manufacturing a rapid-fire modification device.
The charges also include falsifying business records in both the first and second degrees, computer trespass, unauthorized use of a computer, and official misconduct, all in multiple counts. Officials say Sciortino also failed to report the sale or registration of firearms on five occasions.
Details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the alleged offenses remain limited as of Wednesday morning. The NYPD has not issued a public statement on the matter, and Sciortino’s attorney, if retained, has not commented.
The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is expected to conduct a review of the allegations. Sciortino’s current employment status with the department has not been disclosed.
