BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham Police have arrested two men, Damien McDaniel, 22, of Bessemer, and Hatarius Woods, 27, of Fairfield, in connection with the August 13, 2024, murder of 61-year-old Charlie Moore. Both are being held without bond on charges of capital murder (burglary) at the Jefferson County Jail.
Police have also tied McDaniel and Woods to several other high-profile shootings, including a deadly mass shooting at a nightclub on July 13, which left four people dead — Lerandus Anderson, 24; Stevie McGhee, 39; Markeisha Gettings, 42; and Angela Weatherspoon, 56 — and at least 10 others injured. Both men face capital murder charges for that incident.
McDaniel was previously arrested in October in connection with a separate mass shooting on September 21 at a hookah lounge, which killed Carlos McCain, 27; Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26; Anitra Holloman, 21; and Tahj Booker, 27, and injured 17 others. He has also been charged in the murders of Jamarcus McIntyre, 32, and Diontrante Tinae Brown, 35, further adding to the pile of accusations against him.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated that McDaniel is linked to at least 11 murders, with the possibility of more charges as investigations continue. Both McDaniel and Woods are suspected of being involved in other unsolved killings, including potential murders-for-hire.
“We often say on these crime scenes, we have a few select criminals that add to this crime and give Birmingham a bad name,” Thurmond said in a press conference. “Our homicides that have been committed from July to September, about 30% of them involve one of these individual’s names. So, you have over one-fourth of the homicides in Birmingham being committed by just a select few individuals.”
The September 21 mass shooting resulted in more than 300 tips from the public, ultimately leading to the arrest warrant for McDaniel, though other suspects in that case remain at large. Thurmond stressed the importance of community cooperation and said more arrests could follow.
Police are asking residents with any information about McDaniel, Woods, or the unsolved homicides to come forward.
