CUMBERLAND, MD — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a 28-year-old inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, which has been ruled a homicide.
The inmate, identified as Robert Warren, was pronounced dead in his cell on Monday by emergency medical personnel. An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death as homicide.
Investigators have identified another inmate as a suspect in the case but have not yet filed charges. The suspect’s identity has not been released pending the formal placement of charges.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, along with crime scene technicians and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit, is continuing to gather evidence.
The results of the investigation will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for further review and potential charges.
Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding Warren’s death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
