CANTON, Ga. — A 79-year-old woman was struck and killed while crossing the street near a cemetery where she had been paying respects to deceased family members, allegedly by an Amazon delivery driver who continued his route after the collision, authorities said.

Sandra Fitts, a former resident of the area, died near the intersection of Bishop Drive on Friday, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. London Rozier Best, 25, has been charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree and hit-and-run resulting in death.

Deputies investigating the crash spotted an Amazon delivery truck in the area and alerted additional officers to search for the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Shortly after, a local officer located a truck showing damage consistent with the fatal collision.

“The investigation revealed that the Amazon truck in question was the vehicle that struck the pedestrian,” the sheriff’s office confirmed in its release.

Fitts and her husband had recently moved away from the neighborhood but returned regularly to visit their family’s burial plot. Local reports describe Fitts as a frequent visitor to the cemetery, where she tended graves and cared for stray cats.

A quiet moment of remembrance ended in tragedy as an elderly woman’s life was cut short by an alleged hit-and-run driver.
