LAUREL, Md. — A husband-and-wife duo from Laurel has scored a $100,000 top prize on the Maryland Lottery’s $100,000 Crossword scratch-off game, turning their casual lottery routine into a life-changing windfall.
The wife, an avid fan of My Lottery Rewards, usually enters non-winning tickets into second-chance promotions, while her husband enjoys playing scratch-offs. On this occasion, she decided to try her luck while shopping with her mother at the Food Lion in Scaggsville, opting to buy two $10 scratch-offs from a lottery vending machine.
Initially thinking her ticket might be a non-winner, she received a puzzling “See the retailer” message when she scanned it. “I was afraid something was wrong,” she said. But when she scratched the entire ticket, she discovered she had matched 10 words, earning the $100,000 top prize.
The excited winner rushed home to share the news with her husband, who immediately guessed the outcome. “She said, ‘We have a problem, I bought a ticket,’” he recalled, laughing. Together, they reviewed the game word by word to confirm their massive win.
The couple, who are grandparents, plan to use the prize to help with medical expenses for the wife’s mother, for whom she is a caregiver. They also plan to share some of their winnings with family during the upcoming holiday season.
The Food Lion store at 8300 Ice Crystal Drive in Howard County, where the ticket was purchased, will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
This Laurel family’s teamwork and a little luck turned their scratch-off hobby into a six-figure payday.
