Mercy House sets record with 650 Thanksgiving turkey giveaway across three locations

NEWARK, N.J. — The Archdiocese of Newark’s Mercy House brought Thanksgiving cheer to hundreds of families in need this week, distributing a record 650 turkeys during its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway across its Newark, Elizabeth, and Jersey City locations.

The three-day event, held from November 19 to 21, surpassed last year’s total of 540 turkeys, underscoring the growing reach of the initiative. Families received not only turkeys but also bags filled with Thanksgiving staples such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes, ensuring they could enjoy a complete holiday meal.

“Love and family are hallmarks of the Catholic Church, so it’s only fitting that The Mercy House helps our clients celebrate a holiday that honors both,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. “This year, we were able to bring joy to more people than ever thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our staff and volunteers.”

Of the turkeys distributed, approximately 250 were handed out in Newark, while the Elizabeth and Jersey City locations each provided 200. Volunteers worked diligently to ensure families left equipped for a warm and festive Thanksgiving celebration.

With Thanksgiving complete, Mercy House is now preparing for its annual Christmas Gift Giveaway, scheduled for December 17 in Newark, December 18 in Elizabeth, and December 23 in Jersey City. The program will provide toys, clothing, and other gifts for children ranging from infancy to age 17. Donations of new, unwrapped toys, clothing, gift cards, and wrapping supplies are being sought to help make the event a success.
