ANNANDALE, VA — A two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning involving an intoxicated driver left one car overturned and ended with a wanted Annandale man in custody.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:36 a.m. near the intersection of Austin Park Drive and Richmond Highway. Deputies J.J. Suh and C.T. Richardson of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where a Chevrolet was found on its side, trapping the driver inside.

Deputy Richardson assisted the Chevy driver, who sustained minor injuries, out of the vehicle and into an ambulance. Meanwhile, Deputy Suh questioned the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 24-year-old Walter Sanchez Amaya. Sanchez initially claimed another person named “David,” whom he had just met that day, was behind the wheel of the Honda and fled before authorities arrived. Witnesses, however, confirmed Sanchez was the driver.
According to investigators, Sanchez showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking three Modelo beers. A broken Heineken beer bottle was also found inside his vehicle. Police said the crash occurred when Sanchez’s Honda, which was partially stopped on the shoulder and right lane of Richmond Highway, suddenly accelerated and collided with the Chevy traveling southbound.
Sanchez, who was wanted by Maryland State Police on an outstanding bench warrant, was charged with driving under the influence and being a fugitive from justice. He is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
