Kamala Harris Criticized After Lighthearted Exchange With Muslim Influencer Amid Middle East Tensions
WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris is facing backlash after a lighthearted exchange with Muslim influencer Kareem Rahma turned awkward, with the Vice President reportedly describing bacon as “a spice” during an interview that was intended to focus on serious issues, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The interview, which took place over the summer, was never aired, but Rahma recently shared details with the New York Times.
Rahma, the host of the popular social media series Subway Takes, typically features guests discussing quirky or lighthearted topics. However, given his opposition to the administration’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict, Rahma told the Times that he had hoped to address the issue with Harris during their conversation.
“There’s something going on in the world that 100 percent of Muslims care about,” Rahma told the Times, expressing frustration with the Vice President’s apparent reluctance to engage in a meaningful discussion on the conflict.
Instead of addressing the topic, Harris reportedly attempted to steer the conversation toward lighter subjects, at one point calling bacon “a spice” in an exchange that was meant to be humorous but has since sparked criticism on social media. The remark has been interpreted by some as tone-deaf given the serious nature of Rahma’s concerns.
Harris, who is campaigning as the Democratic nominee for president, has faced mounting pressure over the administration’s response to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The interview, which ultimately did not air, has nonetheless generated significant online commentary, with critics accusing Harris of avoiding difficult questions on foreign policy.
The Vice President’s office has not publicly commented on the exchange, which comes as the administration faces heightened scrutiny from both domestic and international observers over its approach to the conflict in the Middle East.
