Philadelphia police find missing woman dead, wrapped in plastic in closet; husband charged

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A missing persons investigation turned into a homicide probe on Wednesday after police discovered the body of 61-year-old Lola Karabaeva inside her home in Northeast Philadelphia, authorities said. Karabaeva was reported missing on Sunday, October 13, 2024, after friends last spoke to her early on October 12.

Officers from the 7th District initially responded to the report at 90XX Diplomat Place and began searching for Karabaeva. On Wednesday, October 16, detectives returned to the residence and found Karabaeva’s body wrapped in plastic inside a closet. She was pronounced dead at 10:13 a.m. by Medic 12.

Karabaeva’s husband, 65-year-old Vladimir Lushevskiy, has been charged with abuse of a corpse, according to police. Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Depending on the findings, additional charges could be filed, and the case is now under the investigation of the Homicide Unit.

The investigation is ongoing.
