D.C. Man Dies Days After Stabbing

Washington, D.C. – A fatal stabbing is under investigation following an incident in Southeast D.C.

On October 2, at approximately 10:53 a.m., members of the Seventh District responded to reports of a stabbing in the 800 block of Chesapeake Street. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male conscious and breathing, suffering from apparent stab wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. He was admitted in critical condition but was released later that week.

On Friday, October 11, 2024, officers returned to the same location in response to an unconscious person. They discovered an adult male who was unresponsive. Emergency services determined there were obvious signs of death, and it was confirmed that the victim died due to complications from his earlier stab wounds.

The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Claybourne Couts, a resident of Southeast DC.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or text the Department’s TIP LINE at 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a homicide in the District of Columbia.
