In a surprising turn of events, Lowell Simon, Chair of the Democratic Party in Moore County, Georgia, has resigned following his arrest for removing Trump 2024 campaign signs. Simon, who was also a candidate for the state House, was observed by a Moore County sheriff’s deputy taking down the signs along Seven Lakes Drive late Thursday afternoon.
The deputy, who was responding to an unrelated call, noticed Simon removing the signs around 5:25 p.m. and later followed him to his residence. The signs were discovered in Simon’s vehicle, and when confronted, he admitted to taking them. In a statement, Simon expressed regret for his actions, stating, “My worse angels got the better of me, and I removed the signs. I shouldn’t have done that.”
The Moore County Democrat Party was quick to create distance between themselves and Simon.
The Moore County Democratic Party announces that Lowell Simon has resigned from his position as Chair following recent allegations and arrest related to the theft of political signs. While we appreciate the hard work and dedication he has shown to the Democratic Party and the community, the Moore County Democratic Party cannot and will not condone the tampering of political signs or any other illegal activity.
Mr. Simon has offered an apology for his actions, as well as his resignation, both of which have been accepted by the MCDP.
We believe in the importance of freedom of expression and speech, and hope that local law enforcement will continue to enforce such laws that protect those freedoms fairly and without bias across party lines.
As we move forward, our focus will remain on electing Democrats up and down the ballot in this critical election. Together, we are committed to promoting the values of justice, fairness, and freedom that our Party holds dear, and we look forward to building a better future for all in Moore County.
Following the incident, Simon offered both an apology and his resignation, which the Moore County Democratic Party swiftly accepted. In their official statement, the party acknowledged Simon’s hard work and dedication but emphasized that they could not condone his actions. They reiterated their commitment to upholding the principles of free speech and political expression, regardless of party affiliation, and stressed the importance of fair and lawful enforcement of such protections.
The resignation comes at a critical time as the party prepares for the 2024 election cycle. While the incident casts an unfortunate shadow over local Democratic efforts, the party remains focused on moving forward and promoting its platform in the upcoming election.
