RESTON, Va. — Sydney Wilson, a trans woman, was fatally shot by police on September 16 after allegedly attacking an officer with a knife, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. On Monday, the department released body-worn camera footage of the officer-involved shooting.
If it wasn’t for Elon Musk purchasing the Twitter platform, this incident could have been the 2024 version of the George Floyd protests. In this case, Twitter (now X) did not censor or edit footage of the incident, leading millions to see what really happened in that apartment hallway.
The footage captures the events leading up to the fatal encounter, which occurred in Reston, Virginia. According to the police, the shooting happened while officers were responding to an unspecified incident. Wilson reportedly confronted one of the officers with a knife, prompting the officer to open fire.
“Today the body-worn camera footage from the September 16 officer-involved shooting in Reston was released,” the department said in a statement. The release of the footage follows ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities have not provided further details on the nature of the incident that led to the encounter. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
