QUEENS, N.Y. — A 55-year-old man was convicted on Tuesday of murdering a 29-year-old woman in his Flushing apartment in 2021, prosecutors said. Quiming Wan was found guilty by a jury of charges including murder, sexual abuse, and tampering with evidence in the death of Jiaomei Zhou.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the conviction, stating, “This defendant brutally murdered a young woman in his apartment and callously carried her lifeless body to his building’s lobby before he was stopped.” Katz added that Wan also attempted to conceal evidence of the crime.
The trial, which began on September 26, concluded on October 8, with the jury reaching a verdict after less than two hours of deliberation. Wan was convicted of murder in the second degree, aggravated sexual abuse in the first degree, sexual abuse in the first degree, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. He is scheduled for sentencing on November 21 and faces 25 years to life in prison.
The incident occurred on November 1, 2021, when officers responded to Wan’s Main Street apartment building around 11:30 p.m. and found Zhou unconscious and unresponsive in the lobby with blood on her clothing. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Investigators discovered blood throughout Wan’s apartment, including on a mattress, desk chair, and wall, as well as in a hidden laundry bag containing blood-soaked items.
An autopsy determined that Zhou died from blunt force trauma to the perineum and pelvis, with the fatal injuries caused by a blunt object being repeatedly inserted into her body, resulting in extensive internal damage.
Justice Michael Aloise presided over the case and will determine Wan’s sentence next month.
