SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — An officer was injured and a dog was fatally shot during the execution of a search warrant early Friday morning in Schenectady, according to police.

The incident occurred around 6 a.m. at 1046 Second Avenue when the Schenectady Police Department’s Special Operations Squad (SOS) was carrying out a search warrant. As officers approached the residence, one member of the team was bitten by a dog in front of the home, officials said.

In response, another officer fired shots at the dog, striking it. The animal was transported to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital by a Schenectady Police Animal Control Officer, but the dog later died from its injuries.

The officer who was bitten was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was treated and released with stitches to his hand.

Police have not provided further details regarding the nature of the search warrant, as the investigation remains ongoing.
