Maryland State Police investigate triple fatal crash in Charles County

NANJEMOY, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Charles County that left three people dead Friday morning.

The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on Port Tobacco Road near Bowie Road. According to police, the driver of a senior-living transportation bus, identified as Charlie Parker, 84, of Mechanicsville, was killed at the scene. Two passengers on the bus, Darlene Burrell, 64, and Cassandra Brown, 61, both of Waldorf, were also pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus collided head-on with a dump truck traveling eastbound on Port Tobacco Road. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured, police said.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus lost control for unknown reasons before striking the dump truck. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.

Port Tobacco Road was temporarily closed for the investigation but has since reopened. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation.
